Fall 2010 Clinic Update

Dear Friends and Families of the Aquinas College Reading Clinics,
The School of Education has undergone several changes over the summer -- all of them positive and encouraging! We have three wonderful new additions to our faculty, Dr. Julia Reynolds [Literacy], Dr. Rui Niu [ESL], and Dr. Gina Garner [LD]. We are confident each will add to our already successful programs. As part of these changes in teaching faculty, we have also been able to partner the Reading Clinic with some of the schools in our area for this Fall. As a result, there will be no on-site clinics at Aquinas. We apologize for any disappointment, but hope you will understand that change is necessary from time to time. We hope to have the clinics back on campus and open to the public in the Spring. Please check back to this site for future updates and schedules. Thank you for all of your trust and support. We have learned so much from working with all the families and intend to maintain our programs and keep learning for many years to come.

Dear Friends,

It seems as if summer just began and now it is almost over. Of course, we say this every year, but every year these beautiful, warm, sunny days seem to get shorter and shorter. The best part of the end of summer is that the start of school is just around the corner! School means books, learning, and most of all READING! This post is to let you know that all of us at the Aquinas Reading Clinic are already thinking ahead to the approach of school and are preparing for a new round of clinics to address and meet the needs of the students in our community. If you are already on the mailing list, look for information and registration materials to arrive in mailboxes around the end of August. Reading Clinic Information

What - Aquinas College will be offering two opportunities for tutoring for students who need additional assistance in reading and writing skills.

Where - The Elementary Summer Reading Clinics will be held on campus at Aquinas College (a complete map with the exact location – Grace Hauenstein Library – will be mailed with registration confirmation).

When – Due to the nature of summer schedules we realize the times allocated for clinic participation may require flexibility and cooperation. The Clinic Directors, Erin Melcher and Dr. Kelli Esteves will maintain a presence and close communication with tutors, but may not be present at each clinic session. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay and utilize the library resources during any and all clinic times.

Opportunity #1 – Elementary (grades 1-5) Cost: $100.00
June 14 – July 16 – Clinic is scheduled to meet twice a week for 2 hours each session, a total of four hours per week. Specific times will be scheduled with the Aquinas tutor assigned to work with your child. Please indicate on the back of the application the times your child is available.

Opportunity #2 – Elementary (grades 1-5) Cost: $50.00
June 24 (initial assessment) *July 5 to July 22 7 sessions [2 hours each]: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 12:30 to 3:30. Specific times will be scheduled with the Aquinas tutor assigned to work with your child. Please indicate on the back of the application the times your child is available.

The fees cover the cost of supplies and snack – Cash, check, or money order accepted - There are a limited number of scholarships available – if you are in need please ask for a scholarship application.

Aquinas College Tutors
Aquinas College tutors consist of teacher candidates (elementary and secondary – various content areas) and certified teachers. All tutors have completed at least one course (and often more) in literacy instruction before beginning the clinic tutoring. Tutors will use individualized lesson plans for each student and provide parents with a personalized report at the end of the tutoring sessions.

Spring has Sprung!

I know this statement is cliche, but it is a great phrase for helping nurture and/or assessing phonological awareness, as well as helping students build vocabulary through the use of word families. The Aquinas College Reading Clinic is always looking for ways to help build literacy skills, which will in turn help motivate and encourage students to love reading!

If you have not done so already this Spring, please visit your local public library. Get to know your librarians and the programs offered for children, especially as we approach the Summer months!

Speaking of Summer......we are gearing up for another great time in our Reading Clinics. We will again hold two elementary clinics and one secondary clinic. The 'Concepts of Print' link is a video of a father doing a wonderful job reading to his infant daughter. In the video you can clearly see this young child beginning to understand how 'books work' a/k/a 'Concepts of Print' - a very important skill all children need to develop their literacy....this video is also a great example of how early we can begin to facilitate this learning.

The other link 'Gotta Keep Reading' is just a fun video that has been making the rounds of teacher email lists this past month.

Secondary Clinics Now Registering!

The Elementary Clinics are now filled, and the Mini-Clinic begins today! Exciting times in the Reading Clinic! We do still have openings in our Secondary Clinics which begin the week of March 15. There are two separate clinics which meet on either Monday or Thursday Evenings. The following is a brief description of what each opportunity provides the participant:

Opportunity #3 – Secondary Reading Clinic (grades 6-12) Help for struggling adolescent readers or students looking to improve their reading skills. Tutoring will be in the following specific areas of need: Word Study, Vocabulary, Reading Fluency, and/or Reading Comprehension. Parents must select needed area as we do not use formal assessments in this clinic.
March 15, 22, 29, April 12, 19, and 26 (students must attend all 6 sessions)
Mondays 6:45 – 8:30 p.m. Cost: $50

Opportunity #4 – Secondary Reading Clinic (grades 6-12) Help for struggling adolescent students looking to improve their study and learning strategies. Students may bring Reading, Writing, Science, or Social Studies homework and learn study and learning strategies that will improve their comprehension, vocabulary, or reading fluency skills.
March 18, 25, April 1, 15, 22 and 29 (students must attend all 6 sessions)
Thursdays 6:45 – 8:30 Cost: $50.00

If you or someone you know might benefit from joining our Aquinas students in the Reading Clinic, we would greatly appreciate the chance to work with any student struggling or just wanting to improve.

The history of the Aquinas Reading Clinic is very rich, and with the support of our friends in the College and community that history will continue to grow. Scholarships are available, so please do not hesitate to inquire.

Opportunity #1 – Elementary Reading Clinic – Help for Struggling Readers, emphasis in this clinic is placed on informal assessment, setting instructional goals, and implementing research-based literacy strategies. Throughout administration and analysis of assessments results, each tutor will develop an individualized and appropriate instructional plan based on a child’s learning needs, strengths, interests, and learning style. Families of students who have reading disabilities or who are 1-2 grade levels behind in the area of reading or writing are encouraged to apply. (grades 1-5) Cost: $100.00
March 15 – April 29 – Clinic is scheduled to meet twice a week [Mondays and/or Wednesdays, anytime between 3:30 to 6:00] for 1.5 hours each, for a total of three hours per week. Specific times will be scheduled with the Aquinas tutor assigned to work with your child. Please indicate on the back of the application the times your child is available.

Opportunity #2 – Elementary Reading Mini-Clinic (grades 1-5) Cost: $50.00
February 25, March 15, 18, 22, 25, 29, April 12, 15, 19, 22, and 26 (students must attend all *11 sessions)
Mon/Thurs. 5:00 – 5:45 [*February 25th is for initial assessment – it cannot be missed]

Thank you for a wonderful Summer Clinic experience. We are so grateful you have shared your most precious gifts with us. We enjoyed working with your children, and are pretty certain they enjoyed their time with us as well. We will be sending final assessment reports to your homes using the postal system. They should arrive around mid-August. Registration materials for the Fall Clinics will also be arriving about the same time. While our clinics are not profit-making, they are self-supporting, and as a result rely upon the participation of the community. Good Morning! We have been extremely busy reading, writing, making books , taking nature walks, playing literacy games, and enjoying ourselves in the Reading Clinic. We are so thankful for all the wonderful children that have spent the past couple of weeks with us. We will be sad to see our friends leave, but we know they are leaving us with new perspectives and skills that will nurture their literacy development. Since tomorrow is our last day of the Summer clinic, we invite all parents and friends to visit us at 10:30, so your student can share what they have been doing and learning in the clinic.

Today we are beginning the morning with reading, writing, working with words, and book-making. At 10:15 we are going to head out across the campus for our nature walk. We wish the weather would be a bit more cooperative. However, we prefer cool to rainy. Yesterday's weather forced us to alter our plans. We hope your children are enjoying their experience. Good Morning! Even though the rain has 'encouraged' the tutors to alter their plans for a nature walk around the campus, we are looking forward to a full day of reading and writing fun! Tutors are working on book-making, and finding all sorts of books about animals....the favorite subject of our clinic participants. Tie-Dye TShirt Care

We hope all the shirts are drying nicely....here are the instructions in case you forget which step is next. Great time today!

Tye Dying
Leave the garment in the bag over night for best color saturation. Rinse with cold water squeeze access water out of the shirt and lay flat to air dry. Do not wash with laundry soap, softeners, or fabric sheets when pre washing. Do not mix with other colored or white clothing when washing for the first time because color will bleed.
A few quick tips:
• Do not use softeners or fabric sheets when pre washing.
• Length of time in dye determines depth of color.
• Rinse project with cold water before untieing to keep color off tied area.
• Let the garment dry flat.
